5 Tashkent Hidden Gems

A personal selection by the editor of Gorod24 Tashkent

Tashkent is more than its well-known landmarks. Sometimes, the best way to get to know the city is to take a different route. We asked Lobar, a content manager at Gorod24 Tashkent, to share five of her favourite places, from local cuisine and Eastern aesthetics to contemporary art and creative spaces.

1. Sholi

Sholi is a restaurant with a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a distinctly local character. It is a good place to start discovering Uzbek cuisine while experiencing the hospitality that is such an important part of life in Tashkent. Come here for a relaxed meal and a taste of the city beyond the usual tourist routes.

2. Zarqaynar Street

Zarqaynar Street offers a glimpse of Tashkent’s Eastern character. Cultural spaces and the Museum of Islamic Civilization are located along the street, while evenings bring a light show that adds a contemporary touch to the area. Come around sunset for a leisurely walk and stay as the street takes on a different atmosphere after dark.

3. Meros Gallery

Meros is a creative space where there is usually something happening. Exhibitions, film screenings, vintage markets and workshops bring together artists, makers and visitors throughout the month. The on-site market is also worth exploring for unusual finds and pieces from local creative projects.

4. Art Gallery of Uzbekistan

The Art Gallery of Uzbekistan is one of the city’s key spaces for discovering Uzbek art. Its spacious halls house an extensive collection, while temporary exhibitions introduce different artists and artistic practices. The programme changes regularly, making it a place worth returning to even if you have visited before.

5. Nukus 89

Nukus 89 is a relaxed spot for an evening in the city. It hosts a range of events and brings together a creative, social crowd. The rooftop offers an impressive view over Tashkent, making it particularly enjoyable on warm evenings when there is time to sit, talk and watch the city below.
