The Golden Apple
Once upon a time, there lived two neighbors. One was rich but childless, while the other was poor but had many children. The poor neighbor's house was filled with noise, laughter, and commotion day and night, giving the rich neighbor no peace.
Oʻtgan zamonda ikki qoʻshni yashagan ekan. Biri boy-u, lekin befarzand, ikkinchisi esa bola-chaqasi koʻp-u, biroq nihoyatda kambagʻal ekan. Bola-chaqasi koʻp kambagʻal qoʻshnining uyi kecha-yu kunduz shovqin-suron, toʻpolon, vagʻir-vugʻur boʻlib, boy qoʻshnisinikiga hech tinchlik bermas ekan.
One day, the rich neighbor approached the poor one and demanded:
"Will you ever quiet down? You have no food to eat, you're deep in debt everywhere, yet your house is full of laughter and noise day and night! What's the meaning of this?"
The poor neighbor replied:
"Oh, neighbor, we have golden apples. We roll them around and play with them, and that cheers us up. That's why laughter never leaves our house."
Upon hearing this, the rich neighbor quietly returned to his house and told his wife:
"Wife, open the chest, take out the gold. I'll take it to the jeweler and have two golden apples made. Then we, too, will live happily."
Bir kun boy qoʻshnisiga chiqib:
— Tinchlik berasizlarmi, yoʻqmi, yeyishga ovqatlaring yoʻq, hamma yoqdan qarz boʻlib yotibsanlar-ku, kechasi-yu kunduzi uylaringda kulgi, shovqin-suron, bu nima degan gap! — deb doʻq uribdi.
Shunda kambagʻal javob qaytaribdi:
— Ey, qoʻshni, bizning oltin olmalarimiz bor. Shularni dumalatib, oʻynab dimogʻimizni chogʻ qilamiz. Shuning uchun bizning uyimizdan kulgi arimaydi, — debdi.
Bu soʻzni eshitgan boy qoʻshni indamay oʻz uyiga kirib xotiniga:
— Xotin, sandiqni och, oltinlarni ol, men ularni zargarga olib borib ikkita oltin olma yasatib kelay, soʻngra biz ham shod-xurram boʻlib yashaymiz, — debdi.
His wife took the gold from the chest and gave it to her husband. The rich man took them to the jeweler and had two golden apples made. He brought the apples home, and he and his wife rolled them around endlessly. But no laughter appeared in either of them.
They grew tired of rolling the golden apples and wondered how they could also laugh and be happy. Finally, the rich man asked his neighbor again:
"Neighbor, my wife and I have also rolled our golden apples a lot, but we haven't found any joy. What's the secret? Please tell me."
Xotini sandiqdan oltinlarni olib eriga beribdi. Boy ularni zargarga olib borib ikkita oltin olma yasatibdi. Olmalarni olib kelib uyida er-xotin rosa dumalatishibdi. Biroq har ikkisida hech qanday kulgu paydo boʻlmabdi.
Ular oltin olmalarni dumalata-dumalata charchab, endi qanday qilsak biz ham kulib, xursand boʻlar ekanmiz, deb oʻylashibdi. Nihoyat boy yana qoʻshnisidan soʻrabdi:
— Qoʻshni, biz ham oltin olmalarni er-xotin juda koʻp dumalatib dumalatib hech qanday xursandchilikka ega boʻlolmadik. Buning siri nimada, aytib bering-chi? — debdi.
The neighbor then replied:
"Oh, rich man, our golden apples, our laughter, our happiness – these are our children. Every day, we rejoice with them, we make a family, we thrive. As a result, our difficulties are forgotten. They are our bounty."
Shunda qoʻshnisi:
— Ey, boy ota, bizning oltin olmalarimiz, kulgimiz, baxtimiz mana shu bolalarimiz. Biz har kuni shular bilan quvonamiz, oilamiz, yayraymiz. Natijada qiyinchiliklarimiz ham unutilib ketadi. Bular bizning bozorimiz, — degan ekan.
