Zaamin Ultra: More Than a Race
I spent two days in Zaamin—a place in the Jizzakh region coined “the Switzerland of Uzbekistan”. Before going, I wasn’t sure if I believed it. Having visited Switzerland before, it was hard to imagine that a country known for its desert heat and arid climate could mirror anything similar to Switzerland.
And yet, after a worthwhile 6-hour bus ride, Zaamin welcomed me with crisp, snow-capped blue mountains; winding roads through lush green valleys; river streams running over pebbles; and fresh, clean mountain air. Turns out, “the Switzerland of Uzbekistan” isn’t just a nickname—it’s the real deal.

This past weekend, the Samarkand Marathon Series hosted the Zaamin Ultra—a celebration of movement, nature, and community. It's known for its trail races, including 2K and 5K distances for all ages. Set against the stunning backdrop of Zaamin’s mountains, the atmosphere is electric. Strangers cheer on strangers, kids run alongside adults, bright pink shirts streak through the valleys, coworkers wave flags of their companies and couples cross the finish line hand-in-hand. Besides the registration fee for runners, the event is free to attend.
But Zaamin Ultra is more than just a marathon for runners. I saw colorful tents dotting the hills, hikers and campers soaking in fresh air, and families picnicking in the sun. Attendees had the option of going on hot air balloon rides, and by nighttime, the entire valley was lit up for an open-air EDM concert headlined by the Doppi Twins. Zaamin Ultra is a chance for locals and tourists alike to experience a different side of Uzbekistan’s landscape.
