Getting Around in Uzbekistan
Taxi
Taxis in Uzbekistan are cheap, with a 30-minute ride costing as little as $1-2. Download the app, Yandex Go (similar to Uber) to call a ride.
Private Car
For more remote areas, such as Karakalpakstan, consider hiring a private driver to help you navigate the desert. Any hotel or tourist company can put you in touch with a driver!
Rental Car
Companies like RentCar.uz and Sixt allow you to rent a car to explore the Silk Roads yourself! International Driving Permits (IDPs) are not required, but you will need to leave a large cash deposit.
Train
Trains connect most major cities in Uzbekistan. There are two types of trains:
Afrosiyob: modern, air-conditioned, high-speed trains. For example, you can take an Afrosiyob from Tashkent to Samarkand in just 2.5 hours! Be sure to buy tickets in-advance on Uzbekistan Railways, as these usually sell out within the month.
Sharq: slower, older, cheaper. Tickets can also be found on Uzbekistan Railways.
Metro
Tashkent is the only Uzbek city with a metro system. Although the lines do not extend far, they cover most major tourist attractions! Buy your token at the counter or tap your credit card for only $0.15 per ride. See routes on the Tashkent Metro app. Read more here.
Plane
To reach Western areas from Tashkent such as Karakalpakstan and Khiva, flying will be the fastest option. Check cheap flights on Uzbekistan Airways!
