My name is Maryam Mao Yamaguchi. I’m Japanese, and I’ve been living in Tashkent since August 2024. I’m excited to show you a place I call “Little Japan” in the heart of the city.
Located just a five-minute walk from Bodomzor metro station, Yapon Bog‘i is a lush, green oasis adjacent to a peaceful pond and in the shadow of the towering hulk of Tashkent Tower. Opened in 2001, this much-loved garden has become a sanctuary for locals seeking a moment of calm amid the bustle of the city.
In May, as the garden awakens from a long, harsh winter, life returns in full bloom. Stepping through the entrance gate, the city’s noise fades into the gentle sounds of nature – birds chirping, water flowing and gravel crunching underfoot. The joyful voices of picnickers on the green lawn add to the lively, welcoming atmosphere. After sunset, Yapon Bog‘i becomes calm and quiet, with soft lights glowing along the paths, creating a romantic mood. Each season brings a different look and feel, so the park is worth visiting throughout the year.
If you’re familiar with Japanese gardens, you’ll notice elements of Japanese garden design all around Yapon Bog‘i. The park owes its charm to four main features:
Trees and plants – cherry blossoms, pine trees, maples, willows, grasses and lotus flowers provide a rich backdrop of greenery.
Stones – gravel paths, stone arrangements and stone lanterns capture the strength of nature and the spirit of Zen.
Water – a large pond, a stream and small waterfalls add serenity and movement to the landscape.
Outdoor structures – a pergola (known as “azumaya” in Japanese) offers a quiet spot to rest and enjoy the view.
Uzbekistan’s love for children shines through in Yapon Bog‘i, where fun meets nature. The garden features play areas and pedal boats – known as duck boats in Japan – that keep kids entertained. But it’s not just people who enjoy this peaceful spot; birds, insects and even friendly cats roam freely here. If you’re lucky, you might see storks or peacocks (symbols of peace and prosperity) strolling in the meadows. During my visit, I was delighted to see a family of ducks swimming happily in the pond.
Yapon Bog‘i is a pleasant place to take a break, not only for locals, but also for visitors who may be tired of walking Tashkent’s busy streets.
