Imagine a map spread out before you, dotted with ancient cities, rolling steppes, and majestic mountains – it’s Kashkadarya, a region located in the basin of the Kashkadarya River, which translates as “river lost in the sand” or “transparent river.” The region’s capital, Karshi, was once an important stop on the Silk Road and boasts a rich 2,700-year history.
Must-see Places
Kashkadarya is home to over 30 archaeological, architectural, and natural sites, making it a paradise for explorers. At the heart of the region lies Shakhrisabz, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Uzbekistan’s most visited destinations, renowned for its ties to Amir Timur and his stunning White Palace. This “Green City” boasts beautifully landscaped parks and historical ensembles that transport you to an era of empire and conquest.
Here’s what you should see:
Amir Timur’s grand palace, the Ak Saray (White Palace), was named thus because its walls looked polished and pale in the moonlight. Construction of this vast complex began in 1380 and continued until 1404. Only the mighty northern portal to the palace remains today, but it is still an impressive sight. The area around it has been landscaped into extensive gardens, and a giant new statue of Amir Timur towers over the park.
The Chorsu Complex is a local crafts bazaar where you’ll find an art gallery presenting artwork made by young and professional artists and artisans.
The Kok Gumbaz Mosque is the resting place of Shaykh Shamsiddin Kulol, Amir Timur’s mentor.
The Dorus Siyodat Mausoleum Complex (the name means Seat of Power) was built by order of Amir Timur. It was meant to be the resting place of Timur himself and his family
The Dorut Tilavat Complex is a religious and architectural ensemble established in the late 14th century. It houses the mausoleum of Sheikh Shamsiddin Kulal and the striking turquoise-domed Friday Mosque.
Beyond Shakhrisabz, don’t miss Karshi, the region’s bustling capital and another top draw for visitors. Key attractions here include the ancient Karshi Bridge, a Silk Road relic spanning the Kashkadarya River; the Odina Madrasah and Mosque, an elegant 16th-century complex dedicated to a female scholar; and the Abu Ubaid ibn al-Jarroh Memorial Complex, honoring an early Islamic figure with serene gardens and historical significance. Other must-visit destinations across the region include the Crypt of Tamerlane near Shakhrisabz, the Hazrati Bashir Sanctuary for its spiritual aura, and the Tahtakaracha Pass, a scenic mountain route offering panoramic views that ranks among Uzbekistan’s top natural attractions. These sites not only highlight Kashkadarya’s rich heritage but also make it an essential stop on any Uzbekistan itinerary, drawing travelers eager to uncover layers of history rarely seen elsewhere.
Culture and Art
Never leave Shakhrisabz without buying a skullcap (doppi). The brilliance of its colors will surely captivate you. You will also find suzane, chapans (coats), shoes, and other products with similar patterns.
The people of Kashkadarya are the heart and soul of this region. Their hospitality opens doors to authentic cultural exchanges. Shared meals and conversations reveal age-old traditions and bring local legends to life. The warmth and friendliness of the locals will make you feel right at home, and their stories will leave you with a deeper understanding of this land's rich heritage.
A Foodie’s Review of Local Favorites
Kashkadarya’s cuisine is a feast for the senses. The region is famous for its tandyrgosht – meat roasted in a clay oven – a dish that reigns supreme among Uzbek delicacies. In addition, you should try the following:
Plov: Fluffy rice cooked with lamb or beef, carrots, onions, and spices. It’s considered the national dish. All 12 regions of Uzbekistan have their own way of preparing it, including Kashkadarya. The ingredients may be similar, but the flavor is different.
Kebab: Skewered and grilled meats, usually served with fresh bread and onions. In this region, the kebabs are larger than elsewhere in Uzbekistan.
Shivit oshi: One of the must-eat dishes of Kashkadarya, this doughy noodle is made from greens and served with a sauce.
